About Peertube

PeerTube is an open-source, decentralized video platform. Rather than relying on a single server, it is composed of independent, community-hosted instances that federate with each other across the Fediverse.

I use MakerTube to share my creative work (zines, sketchbook pages, doodles, process videos) and Lone.Earth to share nature things (walks, observations, camping, field notes).

  • Why I started: I was looking for an alternative to YouTube after being disappointed time and again by their app interface. Although PeerTube can be frustrating, at least it’s ad-free, non-algorithmic, and gives me an easy place to share my video archive.

  • Why I continued: I like to separate topics anyway so this instance-based structure aligned well with my creative flows.

  • What it offers me/value: A static, ad-free repository for my videos and anyone on Mastodon can follow my channels directly without needing to make another new account.

Learning Peertube

  • Help articles: JoinPeerTube gives you all the info you need about what it is, exploring instances, understanding federation, adnd documentation.

  • Geeting started: I recommend going in with a goal - what kinds of videos do you want to post or watch? Then, find an instance that aligns with that goal and join in!

  • Feeds & RSS: Every channel generates an RSS feed making it easy to syndicate videos into other sites or feed readers.

My Video flows

I record videos all the time for whatever random reason I want to, but sometimes I intentionally record to create videos. While on walks, I might record things I’m noticing, stuff that makes me smile, beautiful sights, animals, or sounds. While making stuff, I might start filming because people have asked how I do that, or just because I want to share. I enjoy making process videos and explaining how I do things.

I use CapCut to assemble clips and finalize videos before posting. I generally don’t speak or appear on camera, preferring to emphasize what’s been recorded. I use text overlays, stickers, and audio to offer any narrative needs.
